Mingming Wu教授

Prof. Mingming Wu directs the micro-scale biological engineering lab in the department of biological and environmental engineering department at Cornell University. Her lab is best known for developing micro-scale devices for exploring cellular behavior and their co-evolvement with the environment. The problems of choices are motivated by contemporary problems in health and environment. Current research projects include cancer metastasis, harmful algal blooms, micro-scale bioelectrochemical systems. Dr. Wu received B. S. and PhD in physics, in Nanjing University and the Ohio State University respectively. Prior to joining Cornell, she was a postdoctoral researcher at Ecole Polytechnique in France and University of California at Santa Barbara.

 

Abstract: The advent of nano- and micro-scale biotechnology has  advanced  our  understanding  of  cellular  behavior  (e.  g. growth and metabolic pathway) and their interactions with the environment  (e.  g.  chemical  and  nutrient  gradients).  Such understanding  has  played  important  roles  in  solving contemporary  health  problems  including  cancer.  However, nano- micro-scale technology has just begun to be exploited for dealing  with  issues  arising  in  environment.  Environmental problems  such  as  harmful  algal  blooms  or  biofuels  depend critically on our understanding at smaller scales, i.e. how cells grow or secrete molecules under controlled microenvironment. In this talk, She will describe efforts in my lab in engineering high throughput microhabitats for studies of cyanobacteria growth and cell-cell communication in the context of harmful algal blooms. She will also discuss about the challenges ahead and how digital technology along with nanobiotechnology can help us to build a sustainable environment.
